Reports indicate that England's fast bowler Mark Wood might miss the second Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series. The 35-year-old has been experiencing discomfort in his troublesome left knee, which has persisted after a surgical procedure in March. This injury had already sidelined him during England's home series against Zimbabwe and India, marking a significant loss for England as they gear up to challenge Australia in Brisbane.
Wood made a return during the first Ashes Test in Perth, his first competitive appearance since the Champions Trophy in February. Despite making a mark with his bowling in the first Test, England suffered a quick defeat at the hands of Australia, concluding the match in just two days — the fastest Ashes Test finish in over a century. His brief stint underscores both his abilities and the team’s dependence on his speed.
Although Wood missed his initial training session in Brisbane, he has a few days remaining to demonstrate his readiness. England is likely to adopt a cautious strategy to safeguard his knee. While his teammates engaged in drills at Allan Border Field, Wood stayed back at the hotel to facilitate his recovery. The medical team will thoroughly assess his condition before deciding the final squad for the second Test.
Prior to the Perth Test, Wood had been absent from Test cricket for 15 months due to an elbow setback and subsequent knee surgery. He also experienced tightness in his hamstring during a warm-up match, but scans ruled out serious injury, enabling him to play in Perth where his figures stood at 0–44.
His involvement was pivotal to England's strategy of putting pressure on the Australian batting order with high pace. Should he be unavailable, Josh Tongue is poised to step in. Tongue has already been deployed to play a warm-up match with the England Lions against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra, alongside Matthew Potts and Jacob Bethell. Wood's potential absence could significantly influence England's performance at Gabba, where they haven't secured a victory in day-night Tests since 1986.
England's history with pink-ball Tests has been mixed, claiming just two wins from seven outings, with three losses in Australia. Nevertheless, Wood delivered an impressive performance during the last day-night Test in Hobart in 2022, collecting nine wickets for 152 runs. His prior experience with this format makes him a crucial player, and his absence could create difficulties for England as they strive to level the series.
The second Ashes Test, a day-night contest, is set to commence on November 4 at the Gabba in Brisbane. England's management will need to navigate the challenge of balancing fitness and performance to present their strongest lineup. All eyes will be on Josh Tongue and other alternatives to determine if they can rise to the occasion in Wood's stead.
