Malaysia has temporarily blocked access to the AI chatbot Grok after reports of the tool being misused to generate sexualized and non-consensual images. The move comes after similar action by Indonesia, reflecting growing global concern over the potential harm of generative AI platforms.
Grok, developed by Elon Musk-led xAI, recently limited its image generation and editing features to paying subscribers after lapses allowed users to produce sexually explicit content without consent.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said repeated misuse of Grok “to generate obscene, sexually explicit, and indecent images, including content involving women and minors” prompted the restriction. The agency noted that prior notices to xAI relied on user reporting and failed to prevent harmful content.
MCMC added that access will remain blocked until effective technical safeguards and moderation measures are implemented. The regulator emphasized that Malaysia’s strict online content laws, including prohibitions on obscene and pornographic material, require platforms to prevent misuse.
xAI has yet to provide a detailed response, though the company signaled disagreement with media reports. Malaysian authorities also said they remain open to discussions with the firm to ensure compliance and safety.
Malaysia has increasingly monitored online platforms amid concerns about harmful content and is considering restricting social media access for users under 16.
