Heavy rain and powerful winds disrupted normal life in parts of Kerala on October 7, with intense weather conditions reported in several locations across the state. Trees were seen breaking and falling during periods of strong wind and rainfall, while residents in affected areas experienced sudden changes in weather conditions. Visuals from Mattannur in Kannur district showed the force of the weather as trees were damaged during intense spells of rain and gusty winds. The combination of rainfall, thunderstorms and strong wind created difficult conditions in parts of the region. The weather situation remains active, with the India Meteorological Department warning that more rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are possible over Kerala during the coming days.
Mattannur in Kannur district was among the places where the impact of the weather was clearly visible. Videos and visuals from the area showed trees bending and breaking under the pressure of strong winds. Heavy rain accompanied the gusty conditions, creating a sudden and intense weather episode. Such conditions can become hazardous within a short period, particularly in areas surrounded by trees, electric infrastructure and roads with limited visibility. The October 7 weather activity came as Kerala remained under a period of increased atmospheric instability, with the possibility of additional rain and thunderstorms continuing into the following days.
The IMD alert remains important as the weather department has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Kerala from October 8 to October 10. According to the India Meteorological Department's Thiruvananthapuram centre, heavy rainfall of 7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours is very likely at isolated places during this period. The department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph at one or two places on October 8, 9 and 10. The subdivision-wise warning issued by the IMD also lists heavy rain and thunderstorm activity for Kerala on October 8, 9 and 10. Thunderstorm and lightning activity is also forecast for October 11. This means residents should remain alert even when rainfall appears to weaken temporarily, because thunderstorms and strong wind can develop quickly.
The current Kerala rainfall pattern is expected to remain active over the next several days. Weather authorities have indicated that rain or thundershowers are likely across many parts of the state. Some areas may receive isolated heavy spells, while thunderstorms could develop in association with the rainfall. The latest reports also indicate that several districts have been placed under yellow alerts on different days. The affected districts vary according to the date, with Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Malappuram among those under alert on October 8, while additional districts are included in warnings for October 9 and 10. Residents should therefore keep checking official weather updates, particularly if they are planning outdoor travel or work.
The possibility of strong winds makes the weather situation more difficult, particularly in areas with trees, temporary structures, construction sites and exposed electrical infrastructure. Gusty winds can bring down branches or entire trees, obstruct roads and damage property. When wind coincides with lightning and heavy rain, visibility can also deteriorate rapidly. The IMD has specifically warned of gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph during thunderstorms at isolated places in Kerala. People living in vulnerable areas are therefore advised to remain indoors during severe weather and avoid standing near trees, poles and other exposed structures.
The forecast for thunderstorms is another important part of the latest weather warning. Thunderstorms can develop rapidly and may be accompanied by lightning, sudden wind gusts and intense rainfall. These conditions can create risks for people travelling on roads or working outdoors. The Kerala weather authorities have also stressed the dangers associated with lightning. Residents are advised to move into safe buildings as soon as thunderstorms approach and avoid open areas. During lightning activity, people should stay away from windows and doors and avoid standing under trees. Electrical appliances should also be handled carefully during severe weather. The warning is particularly relevant in rural areas where people may be working in fields or travelling between villages.
The district-wise situation is changing from day to day. For October 8, reports based on the latest weather bulletin said yellow alerts were issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Malappuram. Further alerts were expected across a larger group of districts on October 9, including areas such as Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur. Another update issued later on October 8 listed yellow alerts for seven districts, with the warning pattern changing again for October 9 and October 10. This reflects the rapidly changing nature of the rainfall pattern across the state. Because district-level warnings can change with new observations, residents should rely on the latest official bulletin rather than an older alert.
Kerala's location along India's southwestern coast makes it particularly sensitive to moisture-laden weather systems and changing wind patterns. The current spell is occurring during a period when atmospheric conditions are supporting rainfall and thunderstorm development across parts of southern India. Weather reports have pointed to a broader area of disturbed weather affecting the region, with moisture contributing to cloud development and rainfall over Kerala. The presence of moisture, atmospheric instability and changing wind conditions can allow thunderstorms to become stronger in isolated locations. This is why one area may experience only light rain while another nearby location receives a much heavier spell accompanied by strong winds.
People in areas experiencing heavy rain should take basic precautions to reduce the risk of accidents. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall, particularly when visibility is poor or roads begin to accumulate water. Drivers should reduce speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. People should also avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or waterlogged areas because the actual depth and condition of the road may not be visible. During thunderstorms, staying inside a secure building is safer than remaining outdoors. People should avoid sheltering under isolated trees because lightning can strike trees and nearby areas. Residents should also remain cautious around fallen trees, damaged electrical lines and other objects that may have been affected by strong winds.
The continuing weather activity could affect transportation, outdoor work, agriculture and local travel in different parts of Kerala. Sudden heavy rainfall can reduce visibility on roads and cause temporary waterlogging. Strong winds may also create obstacles if branches or trees fall across roads. Farmers and outdoor workers may need to monitor local forecasts closely, particularly when thunderstorms are expected. For schools, businesses and travellers, the impact will depend on the intensity and timing of rainfall in individual areas. Not every district will experience the same conditions at the same time. This makes short-term weather updates especially important during the current spell.
