Ajwain, commonly known as carom seeds, is a spice prevalent in Indian kitchens, often added to meals for flavor enhancement. However, beyond its culinary applications, ajwain has been traditionally used as a natural remedy for various digestive issues, including gas, bloating, and acidity challenges.
Curious about its purported benefits, I committed to drinking ajwain water every night for 21 days. This article shares my personal journey, detailing the transformations I experienced over the course of three weeks and offering insights for those considering this practice.
Ajwain water is created through soaking or boiling ajwain seeds in water, allowing beneficial properties from the seeds to infuse into the liquid. The natural oils and compounds present are believed to aid digestion and promote overall stomach health.
Generally, ajwain water is consumed:
Before bedtime, or
On an empty stomach in the morning
For this experiment, I consumed ajwain water every night before sleep for 21 consecutive days.
The preparation was straightforward and natural.
Steps Taken:
1 teaspoon of ajwain seeds
1 glass of water
Boiled for approximately 5–7 minutes
Allowed to cool slightly
Consumed warm, without any sweeteners or additives
This routine remained consistent every night for three weeks.
In the initial days, I observed significant changes in my digestion. Given ajwain water's reputation for aiding stomach health, these effects appeared promptly.
First week observations included:
Decreased gas post-dinner
Less bloating sensation
A lighter stomach feeling
Fewer nighttime acidity issues
Drinking ajwain water before bed seemed to soothe my stomach, making heavy meals easier to digest and alleviating the tightness often felt after eating.
By the second week, my digestion felt more regulated. As better digestion often improves sleep quality, I noticed that my sleep patterns became more restful as well.
Second week improvements included:
Diminished burning sensation from acidity
Fewer disturbances at night due to stomach discomfort
Normalizing morning bowel movements
Reduced reliance on digestive medications
Ajwain water acted gradually, providing gentle support to my digestive system without being a quick fix.
Entering the third week, the results became consistent. With no sudden or shocking changes, I overall felt more comfortable.
Third week observations included:
Improved regularity in digestion
Less heaviness after meals
Diminished late-night snack cravings
A general sense of lightness
While public belief holds that ajwain water aids in reducing water retention, I didn’t experience significant weight loss; however, bloating-related fluctuations appeared lessened.
During the 21 days, ajwain water appeared to assist with:
Mild stomach discomfort
Digestion after indulging in spicy or oily foods
Halitosis related to poor digestion
Enhanced gut equilibrium
These improvements surfaced gradually.
It’s vital to hold realistic expectations regarding ajwain water. It is not a wonder solution.
What it did not accomplish:
Facilitate rapid weight loss
Serve as a cure for severe stomach conditions
Replace the importance of a balanced diet or regular exercise
Produce identical results every day
It functions as a support mechanism rather than a direct remedy.
Despite ajwain water being a natural substance, it may not suit everyone's needs.
Individuals who should exercise caution include:
Pregnant individuals
Those with stomach ulcers
People with particularly sensitive digestion
Individuals on long-term or strong medications
Excessive consumption of ajwain water may lead to digestive irritation or dryness.
Moderation is key.
Suggested quantity:
1 glass daily
Best consumed at night or early morning
Exceeding this limit is not advisable.
Ajwain water proves most beneficial when paired with healthy lifestyle habits such as:
Having a light dinner
Steering clear of overly oily nighttime meals
Staying adequately hydrated throughout the day
Eating meals punctually
Without these practices, ajwain water's effectiveness may be limited.
Consuming ajwain water nightly for 21 days can gently assist digestion, mitigate bloating, and enhance overall stomach comfort. Its influence is gradual and natural, diverging from immediate medicinal effects.
Ajwain water should be regarded as a beneficial daily habit rather than a singular treatment. With regular consumption and moderation, it may aid gut health and enhance nighttime digestion.
Each person’s body reacts differently. What benefits one individual may not yield the same results for another. Observing personal responses is crucial.
For those seeking a simple, organic approach to bolster digestion, ajwain water can serve as an advantageous part of a balanced daily regimen.
This article serves informational purposes only. The experiences shared are personal and may vary per individual. Ajwain water is recognized as a traditional remedy and should not replace professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Readers with existing health conditions, digestive concerns, or those who are pregnant or on medication should consult a healthcare expert before integrating ajwain water into their routine.
