In the vibrant spectrum of Hindu festivals, Ahoi Ashtami stands out as a deeply emotional and spiritual occasion dedicated to mothers and their children. It is a day when mothers observe a sacred fast and offer prayers for the long life, prosperity, and happiness of their children. In 2025, Ahoi Ashtami will be observed on Monday, October 13, during the Kartik Krishna Paksha Ashtami Tithi.
This holy festival beautifully reflects a mother’s love and devotion, symbolizing her selfless prayers for her children’s protection and success.
The word Ahoi refers to Ahoi Mata, a divine form of Goddess Lakshmi, who is believed to bless devotees with wealth, prosperity, and the well-being of their children. The festival’s roots lie in an ancient legend about a woman who unintentionally caused harm to a young animal. As a result, misfortune struck her family, and she lost her children one after another. Filled with remorse, she sincerely prayed to Goddess Ahoi for forgiveness and began observing a strict fast. Pleased with her devotion, the Goddess blessed her by restoring her children.
Since then, mothers observe the Ahoi Ashtami vrat every year to seek the divine protection of their children and ensure their good health and long life.
The festival highlights the power of faith, repentance, and divine grace, reminding devotees that sincerity and devotion can transform destiny itself.
In 2025, Ahoi Ashtami will be celebrated on October 13.
Ahoi Ashtami Date: Monday, October 13, 2025
Puja Muhurat (Evening Worship): 5:25 PM – 6:38 PM
Star Sighting Time (Tara Darshan): Around 5:47 PM
Moonrise (Optional for Some Regions): Around 11:05 PM
Traditionally, the fast is broken after sighting the evening stars, which symbolizes divine blessings being received by the devotee.
The rituals of Ahoi Ashtami vrat are performed with utmost devotion and purity. The day begins early, often before sunrise, and continues until the evening when the stars appear.
Morning Preparations
Sacred Bath: Women wake up early, take a holy bath, and wear clean or new clothes.
Sankalp (Vow): They take a pledge to observe the fast for the welfare and prosperity of their children.
Fasting Begins: The fast is generally nirjala, meaning without food or water, until the evening puja and star sighting.
Drawing or Installing Ahoi Mata’s Image
In the evening, devotees prepare a space on the wall or altar and either draw the image of Ahoi Mata using red or ochre colors or install a printed picture of the Goddess. The drawing typically features eight corners (Ashta Koshthak) and small figures of children or animals symbolizing fertility and protection.
Evening Puja and Vrat Katha
During the Ahoi Ashtami puja, mothers light a diya (lamp) and offer flowers, rice, roli, and sweets to Ahoi Mata. The Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha (story) is then narrated, describing the legend of the woman who regained her children through devotion and fasting. Listening to or reading this story is considered essential for completing the vrat.
Devotees also offer Prasad — usually consisting of halwa-puri or other traditional sweets — which is later shared among family members after the fast is broken.
Breaking the Fast (Paran)
After the stars are visible in the sky, women offer water and prayers to the stars, symbolizing their connection to divine cosmic energy. They then end the fast by eating the Prasad. In some households, the fast is concluded only after moonrise, but most traditions follow tara darshan (star sighting).
Observing Ahoi Ashtami requires sincerity, discipline, and devotion. Here are some dos and don’ts followed during the vrat:
Do’s:
Maintain cleanliness and purity throughout the day.
Keep your mind focused on prayers, meditation, and your children’s welfare.
Listen to or read the Ahoi Mata Katha with devotion.
Offer charity or food to the needy, especially women and children.
Seek blessings from elders and other mothers who observe the fast.
Don’ts:
Avoid anger, gossip, or arguments on this sacred day.
Do not consume food or water before the star sighting (if following nirjala vrat).
Refrain from using harsh words or hurting anyone’s feelings.
Avoid eating non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or grains even after the fast is completed.
By following these rules, devotees maintain the sanctity and spiritual energy of the Ahoi Ashtami vrat.
Beyond its religious value, Ahoi Ashtami symbolizes a mother’s unconditional love and her willingness to undergo hardship for her children’s happiness. The fast represents self-discipline, sacrifice, and unwavering faith — virtues that strengthen both spiritual and emotional bonds within families.
On a deeper level, the act of fasting and praying purifies the mind and soul, aligning one’s intentions with the universe’s nurturing energy. The ritual of star sighting symbolizes the eternal connection between humans and the cosmos, suggesting that divine blessings are always shining upon us — even from afar.
Blessings for children’s health and prosperity.
Spiritual protection from negative energies and misfortune.
Harmony and happiness in the family.
Fulfillment of desires related to motherhood and family well-being.
Strengthening of faith, patience, and emotional resilience.
The festival is also believed to enhance the divine bond between Ahoi Mata and the devotee, ensuring her blessings continue throughout the year.
Ahoi Ashtami 2025 is more than a religious observance — it is a heartfelt celebration of motherhood, love, and divine faith. As mothers across India prepare for this auspicious day, their prayers echo with one simple wish: that their children remain healthy, happy, and prosperous.
Observing this sacred fast with sincerity not only strengthens family bonds but also fills homes with peace, positivity, and divine blessings. May Ahoi Mata bless every mother and child with abundance, protection, and endless joy.
