A shocking case of abduction and sexual assault has emerged from Coimbatore, where a young woman college student was kidnapped and assaulted near the city’s airport late Sunday night. Police confirmed that the incident took place when the survivor was traveling in a car with her male friend.
According to officials, a three-member gang intercepted their vehicle, attacked the student’s friend, and forcibly took the woman to another location where she was allegedly sexually assaulted. The survivor is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
A senior police officer said, “The sexual assault has been confirmed. The survivor is safe and receiving medical care. Seven special teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused. We will share updates as soon as there is a breakthrough.”
Police have initiated a large-scale search operation to nab the perpetrators and are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas. Investigators are also questioning potential witnesses to piece together the sequence of events.
The assault has sparked outrage across Tamil Nadu, with political parties and social groups condemning the attack and demanding stronger action for women’s safety.
BJP state president K. Annamalai called the incident “utterly shocking,” alleging that the ruling government has failed to maintain law and order. “Since the DMK came to power, crimes against women have increased, and offenders appear to have no fear of the law,” he said in a statement on social media.
Responding to the criticism, DMK spokesperson Dr. Syed Hafeezullah termed the incident “deeply unfortunate” but assured that the government will take strict action. “Tamil Nadu enforces stringent measures against such crimes. The accused will be punished, and justice will be delivered swiftly,” he stated.
The case adds to growing public concern over women’s safety in Tamil Nadu, with activists urging for faster legal proceedings and increased surveillance in sensitive zones across the state.
