The ongoing political unrest in Nepal has disrupted air travel between India and Nepal. On Tuesday, Air India, IndiGo, and Nepal Airlines cancelled multiple flights from New Delhi to Kathmandu after the Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal’s capital was temporarily closed due to massive anti-government protests.
Air India announced the cancellation of four flights operating on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route. The airline stated that one of its flights had to return to New Delhi because smoke was seen at the airport during the final approach.
In an official statement, Air India said:
"In view of the current situation prevailing in Kathmandu, the following flights AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220, AI217/218, and AI211/212 operating on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route have been cancelled today. We are closely monitoring the situation and will share further updates."
Air India normally operates six flights daily between Delhi and Kathmandu.
In addition to Air India, IndiGo and Nepal Airlines also cancelled their flights to Kathmandu. The temporary closure of Tribhuvan International Airport came as protests escalated across Nepal, particularly in Kathmandu, where violent demonstrations have been reported.
Nepal has been facing massive anti-government protests in recent days. Citizens, especially young people, have been protesting against corruption and the government’s social media ban. On Tuesday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned, adding to the uncertainty in the nation.
The unrest has caused roads to be blocked, government buildings attacked, and general instability in the capital. Authorities have also imposed curfews to control the protests, but violence has continued.
The flight cancellations have affected many passengers traveling between India and Nepal, including tourists, business travelers, and students. Airlines are advising passengers to check flight schedules and stay updated on travel advisories before planning trips.
The situation highlights how political instability in one country can have immediate effects on international travel and safety. Airports, airlines, and governments must act quickly to protect travelers during such crises.
The cancellation of flights between Delhi and Kathmandu is a direct consequence of Nepal’s political turmoil. With the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and continuing protests, the situation remains uncertain. Travelers are advised to follow official airline updates and safety guidelines.
Nepal’s unrest also shows the wider impact of political crises, not just on citizens but on international travel, trade, and regional stability
