Alphabet Inc’s Google has announced a major investment of $10 billion to establish a massive data centre and artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Andhra Pradesh, making it the company’s largest investment in southern India. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s position in AI technology, data infrastructure, and digital innovation, while also creating significant employment opportunities in the region.
According to officials from the Andhra Pradesh state government, Google will construct a 1-gigawatt data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, a major port city. The project will combine state-of-the-art AI infrastructure, large-scale energy solutions, and an expanded fibre-optic network, ensuring robust connectivity and supporting large-scale digital operations. The investment aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a leading hub for AI research, cloud computing, and digital services in South Asia.
A formal agreement on the project is expected to be signed shortly, marking the official start of this transformative investment. The move comes amid growing competition among global technology companies, which are investing heavily in building new data centre infrastructure to meet the rising demand for AI-based services, cloud computing, and digital platforms.
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh highlighted the strategic importance of the investment, stating, “In an era where data is the new oil, such initiatives will serve as a strategic advantage. This project will not only enhance the state’s digital infrastructure but also attract more global technology companies to invest in India.”
The Visakhapatnam campus will include advanced energy solutions, ensuring sustainable operations for the high-capacity data centre. This will enable Google to scale AI services, support research initiatives, and strengthen cloud computing resources in India and neighboring regions.
The project is also expected to have significant socio-economic benefits, including the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, enhancement of local infrastructure, and increased opportunities for AI startups, research institutions, and tech talent in Andhra Pradesh. With this investment, Google aims to solidify India’s digital ecosystem, positioning the country as a key player in global AI and cloud technologies.
This development reflects the broader trend of big tech companies investing in India to tap into the growing digital economy, foster innovation, and meet the global demand for AI-powered solutions. Andhra Pradesh’s strategic location, combined with supportive government policies, makes it an attractive destination for such high-tech investments.
