The company introduced HarmonyOS 6, the newest version of its own operating system (OS). This update includes smart AI helpers called "AI agents" that can do tasks for users without needing to install apps. Right now, the new system is only available for developers to test. A full launch for everyone will come later.
So far, HarmonyOS 5 has been installed on over 40 different devices, like phones and tablets. Huawei said that over 8 million developers are working on apps for the HarmonyOS system. More than 30,000 apps and mini-tools (called “atomic services”) are already available.
Even though HarmonyOS is not as big as Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android, Huawei says that the top 5,000 apps are used most by their users, which covers almost all of the time people spend on their devices.
They also introduced a new HarmonyOS Agent Framework, which helps developers create these smart AI helpers without building big AI models themselves. When HarmonyOS 6 officially launches, there will be over 50 AI agents ready to use, made by popular Chinese apps like Weibo and Ximalaya.
Huawei also launched new Pangu AI models (version 5.5). One model for language has 718 billion learning settings, and another for images has 15 billion. These AI tools are meant to help in areas like medicine, finance, factories, cars, and government services.
Since facing trade restrictions from the US, Huawei has worked hard to build its systems. They’ve now sold over 103 million smartphones and 21 million tablets with HarmonyOS. Nearly half of those sales happened in 2024, showing fast growth.
Huawei also revealed a powerful new cloud server called CloudMatrix 384. It’s made to help companies build and use AI. This server uses 384 special AI chips (called Ascend) and 192 regular chips (called Kunpeng). Huawei says their system now works faster than some systems made by Nvidia, a big chip company.
