Israel Claims Killing of Senior Iran Quds Force Operative in Lebanon

Israel Claims Killing of Senior Iran Quds Force Operative in Lebanon

Post by : Meena Ariff

The Israeli military on Thursday announced that it had killed a senior operative of Iran’s elite Quds Force during a targeted operation in southern Lebanon. According to Israeli officials, the man played a crucial role in planning attacks against Israel from both Syria and Lebanon.

The operative was identified as Hussein Mahmoud Marshad al-Jawhari, whom Israel described as a key member of Unit 840, a covert arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The unit is believed to be responsible for overseas operations, including intelligence gathering and attack planning.

Israeli officials said al-Jawhari was operating under direct guidance from Iranian commanders and was actively involved in what they termed “terror activities” aimed at Israeli military and security targets. His killing reportedly took place in the Ansariyeh area of Lebanon, though the military did not disclose further operational details.

The development comes amid continued tensions between Israel and Iran, following a brief but intense confrontation earlier this year. Israel has also been conducting near-daily strikes in Lebanon, which it says are intended to prevent the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah from rebuilding its military capabilities.

A U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024 had ended more than a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. The agreement included provisions requiring Hezbollah to begin disarming in areas south of a river close to the Israeli border. However, Israel maintains that Iranian-linked activities continue to pose a serious security threat in the region.
