Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the government will take action on any complaints about shops or businesses raising prices unfairly after the new electricity tariffs began today.

He shared that the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has started a special operation called Ops Kesan 4.0 to make sure no one takes advantage of the tariff changes to make extra profit.

“I always keep in touch with the KPDN Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali to get the latest updates if people or netizens complain about any price manipulation,” he said. Fahmi was speaking after launching YTL Communications’ new six-way mobile base station in Tanjung Asam.

Fahmi also said he believes prices of goods and services will not go up because of the new electricity rates. Earlier, he explained that 23.6 million users will likely see their electricity bills stay the same or even become cheaper with the new tariffs.

He mentioned that the base tariff has dropped by 19 percent compared to what was expected before.

“For people who use less than 1,000 units (kWh) a month, their bills might stay the same or even become lower,” he said.

He added that the biggest change from today is that 2 pm to 10 pm will now be considered peak hours.

“We can save money by using items that need a lot of electricity like washing machines, air conditioners, or ovens outside of these peak hours,” he advised.

He explained that peak hours are set during times when most factories are operating at full speed. Because of this, the government encourages everyone to use electrical appliances during off-peak times to save on their bills.
