Mohammed Shami ordered to pay ₹4 lakh monthly alimony

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been directed by the Calcutta High Court to pay a total of ₹4 lakh every month as alimony to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter. The decision comes after Jahan challenged an earlier ruling by a lower court that granted her a lesser amount.

Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee passed the order on Tuesday, instructing Shami to pay ₹1.5 lakh monthly to his wife and ₹2.5 lakh to their daughter. The court noted that the revised amount is "fair and reasonable" to ensure financial stability for both, pending final judgment on the main application.

“The husband is at liberty to voluntarily assist the child with educational and other reasonable expenses beyond the fixed amount,” the court added.

Hasin Jahan had originally sought ₹10 lakh per month—₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for her daughter—but the lower court had rejected that plea. The High Court, however, reviewed Shami’s financial records and found that he is capable of paying a higher sum. The order emphasized that Jahan, who remains unmarried and is living independently with the child, is entitled to maintenance in line with the standard of living she had during the marriage.

The couple has been locked in a legal and personal battle since 2018, when Jahan filed an FIR against Shami and his family, accusing them of domestic violence and dowry harassment. She also alleged neglect of their child and had, at one point, accused Shami of match-fixing—claims that were later dismissed, with the cricketer cleared of all charges by the cricket board.

Shami and Jahan were married in April 2014, but their relationship deteriorated four years later, leading to a prolonged legal dispute.
