Mumbai police have registered a case against a 29-year-old man from Lower Parel for allegedly sexually abusing and threatening a 31-year-old woman in the United States. The victim, originally from Mahim, said the abuse occurred under the false promise of marriage.
Officials said the accused, who is pursuing a PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), allegedly committed the abuse over a period of five months between January 1 and June 12. The incidents took place both in a luxury hotel in Bandra, Mumbai, and later in the United States.
The father of the accused holds a senior position in a private bank, authorities added.
According to the FIR, the accused initially met the victim through a marriage proposal contact. After meeting several times, he allegedly asked her to book a hotel room in Bandra to discuss “important matters in life.” Once inside, the victim claimed he sexually abused her.
The abuse continued when both were in the US. When the victim discovered that the accused was communicating with other women about marriage, she confronted him. Reports say he physically assaulted her, threatened to make her nude photos public, and even threatened to set her on fire.
The victim later informed her mother and approached Mumbai police with a formal complaint. The FIR includes charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 69 (sexual intercourse by deceit), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation).
Authorities have confirmed that the case is under investigation and steps are being taken to ensure a thorough probe.
