Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, admitted that it is too early to decide whether he will play a full Grand Slam season next year. The 38-year-old Serbian tennis star is feeling the physical strain of competing at the highest level while facing the rise of young stars like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic’s comments came after his defeat in the US Open semi-final on Friday, where he lost to second seed Alcaraz in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2. This marks the first time since 2017 that Djokovic has not reached a major final, signaling a possible shift in the tennis landscape and the increasing difficulty of staying at the top as he advances in age.
Speaking after the match, Djokovic said:
“I'm happy with my level of tennis, but you know, it's just the physicality of it. It will be very difficult for me in the future to overcome the hurdle of Sinner, Alcaraz, in the best-of-five on the Grand Slams. I think I have a better chance in best-of-three, but best-of-five, it's tough.”
The seven-time US Open champion acknowledged that the younger generation is raising the intensity and level of the sport, making it harder for veteran players to compete over long matches in major tournaments.
Friday’s showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium was one of the most anticipated matches in New York. Djokovic faced Alcaraz, a 22-year-old Spaniard 16 years his junior, in what was called the hottest ticket in the city. The stadium was packed with fans and celebrities, highlighting Djokovic’s enduring popularity more than two decades after his debut at Flushing Meadows.
During the match, Djokovic showed flashes of his trademark creativity, including smart plays at the net and clever shot-making. However, he struggled to match Alcaraz’s intensity and pace, producing roughly half as many winners as his younger opponent. The physical demands of the match and Alcaraz’s relentless pressure ultimately proved too much, resulting in Djokovic’s straight-sets defeat.
This year has been challenging for Djokovic. Before the US Open, he lost in the semi-finals of Wimbledon and the French Open (Roland Garros) to Sinner and also retired in the semi-final against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open due to injury.
Despite these setbacks, Djokovic remains determined and motivated. He stated:
“I'm not giving up on Grand Slams. I'm going to continue fighting and trying to get to the finals and fight for another trophy at least. But, you know, it's going to be a very difficult task.”
Djokovic’s next tournament on the ATP Tour will be in Athens, but he said it is too soon to confirm whether he will participate in the 2025 Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
“At least at this stage of my career, I mean, I'm not thinking that far. I still want to play Grand Slams, Grand Slam season, full Grand Slam season next year. Let’s see whether that’s going to happen or not,” Djokovic told reporters.
This reflects a cautious approach as he balances his love for the game with the physical demands of playing at an elite level against younger, faster competitors.
Djokovic remains one of the most successful tennis players in history, with 24 major titles and a career filled with remarkable comebacks and memorable matches. His determination to continue competing at the highest level is clear, but he also recognizes that the game is changing, with rising stars like Alcaraz and Sinner challenging his dominance.
As Djokovic considers his future, fans and fellow players alike will watch closely to see if he can adapt his game, manage his physical limits, and continue competing for Grand Slam titles. His comments show honesty about the realities of aging in professional sport while also highlighting his undying passion and drive to compete.
While the road ahead may be more difficult, Djokovic’s legacy as one of tennis’s all-time greats is already secured. Whether he continues to pursue full seasons of Grand Slam tennis or adjusts his schedule to focus on selective events, his determination and love for the sport remain as strong as ever.
