Quebec's F-35 Maintenance Hub Proposal Gains Momentum

Quebec's F-35 Maintenance Hub Proposal Gains Momentum

Post by : Meena Ariff

Various companies associated with the F-35 initiative are advocating for Canadian and Quebec governments to spotlights potential economic advancements, including establishing a maintenance hub close to Montreal. However, these benefits largely depend on Canada's decision to order the entire fleet of 88 jets.

L3Harris Technologies Canada is suggesting that its Mirabel location could serve as a maintenance facility for both Canadian and U.S. F-35 aircraft, pending the securing of government funding for necessary security enhancements and U.S. authorization. Currently, the company services Canada’s aging CF-18 aircraft.

“Our aim is to be prepared to receive U.S. F-35s by 2028-29,” stated Richard Foster, L3Harris vice president and former major-general with the RCAF. Upgrading the facility may involve an investment of up to $200 million, which could safeguard 1,500 direct jobs along with 3,500 indirect ones.

Currently, Ottawa's commitment extends only to acquiring 16 jets, leaving the fate of the rest of the order in doubt. Another option under consideration includes Saab’s Gripen jets, which could also potentially be assembled in Canada.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly underlined the government's objective to maximize the economic advantages tied to military acquisitions. Lockheed Martin has indicated that the depth of Canada’s industrial benefits will correlate with the total jets acquired.

The Quebec government is actively monitoring both alternatives, focusing on endeavors that promise substantial local economic returns.
