Los Angeles: The Walt Disney Company has reportedly cancelled its planned live-action remake of the classic animated film Robin Hood. Director Carlos López Estrada confirmed that the project, which had been in development for Disney+ for several years, will no longer move forward.
Speaking during an online discussion, López Estrada said the project had effectively been shelved despite the creative team believing it had strong potential. The film had been in development since around 2020 and was expected to reimagine Disney’s 1973 animated classic featuring anthropomorphic animal characters based on the legendary English outlaw.
The director also hinted that he may revisit a similar concept independently in the future with different characters. The live-action remake was expected to feature original music and a fresh interpretation of the beloved story.
The screenplay for the project was being written by Kari Granlund, who previously worked on Disney’s live-action adaptation of Lady and the Tramp. Producer Justin Springer was also attached to the project.
Originally released in 1973, Disney’s animated Robin Hood became a classic in the studio’s film library, with voice performances by Brian Bedford, Monica Evans and Phil Harris. The film’s song “Love” was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
In recent years, Disney has focused heavily on producing live-action remakes of its animated classics, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. However, not all remake projects reach production, as studios frequently revise development plans based on budgets, strategy and audience demand.
