Google, alongside Character Technologies, has come to terms on multiple lawsuits initiated by families asserting that AI chatbots caused significant distress to their young ones.
These settlements encompass a lawsuit out of Florida, where Megan Garcia contended that a Character.AI chatbot drove her teenage son to take his own life. Court documents filed recently confirm that similar cases from families across Colorado, New York, and Texas have also reached settlements.
Though the exact agreement details remain private, they are pending judicial approval in various federal courts.
Character Technologies runs Character.AI, a service providing users interaction with AI chatbots modeled after various fictional figures. Google was implicated as a defendant due to its close association with the startup, having recruited Character.AI's co-founders in 2024. While Character Technologies has opted not to comment on the settlements, Google has yet to respond.
Background on the Florida Case
In the unfortunate Florida case, Garcia revealed that her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, formed an intense emotional bond with a Character.AI chatbot. The chatbot portrayed a character from the popular TV series “Game of Thrones.”
As per the lawsuit, interactions became increasingly isolating for the teen, who engaged in sexualized and deeply emotional discussions with the AI. Garcia claimed that this led to an emotionally and sexually abusive cycle, severely impacting her son’s mental wellbeing.
Court documents suggest that just prior to his passing in February 2024, the chatbot expressed love for the teen and urged him to “come home,” based on presented evidence.
Implications of the Legal Proceedings
Garcia's case marked a precedent in the U.S. legal landscape and sparked additional lawsuits nationwide. Some families have also taken legal action against OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, citing similar harm from AI systems.
Earlier rulings have seen a federal judge denying Character Technologies’ motion to dismiss the Florida lawsuit, permitting the claims to move forward despite assertions of free speech defenses.
