7.0 Earthquake in Tibet Kills 16, Hundreds of Homes Collapse

7.0 Earthquake in Tibet Kills 16, Hundreds of Homes Collapse

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

A powerful late-night earthquake struck a remote region of Tibet, killing at least 16 people and leaving homes and livestock shelters damaged. Thousands of residents have been evacuated as emergency teams continue rescue and relief operations in difficult mountain conditions. A powerful Tibet Earthquake struck Baqing County near Nagqu in China's Xizang Autonomous Region at approximately 10:33 p.m. on October 22, 2026. The magnitude 7.0 tremor caused significant damage in the remote region, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32, according to the initial information provided by authorities. The earthquake damaged communities across the affected area, with more than 330 homes reported collapsed. Livestock shelters were also affected, raising concerns about the safety of residents, their animals and their livelihoods as emergency operations continued.

Thousands Evacuated as Rescue Efforts Intensify

The 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake prompted an immediate emergency response. Authorities evacuated more than 12,000 residents from affected areas and dispatched rescue personnel, firefighters and essential supplies. Tents and winter equipment were sent to help people who could no longer safely remain in their homes. President Xi Jinping called for comprehensive search-and-rescue efforts and urgent medical care for injured residents. Emergency teams are working to locate people who may still need assistance, assess damaged buildings and provide temporary shelter to displaced families.

Difficult Terrain Complicates Relief Operations

The Nagqu Earthquake has posed challenges for rescuers because the affected region is mountainous and remote. Aftershocks can create additional risks for people working near damaged buildings, while difficult terrain and cold conditions may complicate the movement of rescue teams and supplies. Authorities must also assess the structural safety of homes and livestock shelters before residents can safely return. For families in rural communities, damage to shelters and other essential structures can create difficulties beyond the immediate danger of the earthquake.

International Support and Condolences

Pakistan's prime minister offered condolences and expressed support following the disaster. The response highlights the concern generated by the earthquake and the importance of timely assistance for affected communities. The Earthquake Rescue Operations remain focused on rescue work, medical assistance, evacuations and the delivery of essential supplies. Officials are expected to continue evaluating the extent of the destruction as more information becomes available.
