US-India Ties Must Strengthen Nikki Haley Urges Quick Talks

US-India Ties Must Strengthen Nikki Haley Urges Quick Talks

Post by : Raman

Washington: The United States needs to be careful not to let its disagreements with India turn into a long-lasting problem, former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has said. In an op-ed published in Newsweek, Haley called the partnership between India and the US “a no-brainer” in countering China’s growing influence.

Haley, a Republican and former presidential candidate, said that the US must focus on repairing its relationship with India and give it as much attention as it gives to countries like China or Israel. She added that ignoring this could give China a chance to drive a wedge between Washington and New Delhi.

“Partnership between the US and India to counter China should be a no-brainer,” Haley wrote. She also warned that escalating trade disputes with India would be a “massive mistake” and could harm decades of friendship between the two largest democracies in the world.

Haley called for a direct meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to solve the disagreements. She said that such talks are urgent and would help both countries work together on bigger issues, especially when it comes to countering China’s influence both economically and militarily.

The op-ed also touched on the issue of Russian oil. The Trump administration had imposed 25 percent tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil. Haley urged India to take US concerns seriously and work with Washington to find a solution that benefits both countries.

Haley emphasized that disagreements are normal in international relations, but ignoring them or letting them grow can damage important partnerships. “Decades of friendship and goodwill between the US and India provide a strong base to move past current problems,” she wrote. “Difficult conversations often show a partnership is deep and meaningful. To face China, the United States must have a friend in India.”

Although Haley ran against Trump in the Republican primaries in 2024, she later endorsed him. However, she has remained vocal about policies she believes could harm US interests, especially when it comes to India.

Experts say that the message is clear: the US and India must work closely to maintain trust and cooperation. Trade disagreements or issues like Russian oil should not overshadow the bigger goal of strengthening ties between the two countries and standing together on global challenges.

In conclusion, Haley’s warning is a reminder that the US-India relationship is vital, not only for trade but also for security and strategic cooperation. Both nations benefit when they handle disputes with care, maintain open communication, and focus on long-term friendship.
