Drone Strike Hits Nakhchivan Airport in Azerbaijan Civilians Injured Regional Tensions Rise

Post by : Shakul

Tensions in the South Caucasus escalated after drones struck the area around Nakhchivan International Airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, damaging the passenger terminal and injuring several civilians. Azerbaijani officials said the drones crossed from Iranian territory and exploded near the airport and a nearby school building, prompting emergency response teams and raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

According to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry, at least two attack drones entered the country’s airspace on March 5, 2026, with one hitting the airport’s terminal building and another falling close to a school in the village of Shakarabad. The strikes caused structural damage and left multiple civilians injured, though no fatalities were immediately reported. Authorities quickly secured the area and launched an investigation into the incident.

The Azerbaijani government strongly condemned the attack, calling it a serious violation of international law and summoning Iran’s ambassador for explanations. President Ilham Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures, while the country’s military was placed on heightened alert following the strike.

Iran has denied responsibility for the attack, saying it does not target neighboring countries. The incident comes amid rising regional tensions linked to the broader confrontation involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Analysts warn that the strike could signal the conflict expanding beyond the Middle East into the South Caucasus region.

The situation has also affected international aviation routes. Azerbaijan temporarily closed parts of its airspace after the attack, forcing airlines flying between Europe and Asia to adjust routes and raising concerns about aviation safety in the region.
