A brief moment of panic spread among devotees after the sacred flag atop the famous Jagannath Temple caught fire late at night in the coastal city of Puri.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the temple’s towering spire before flames became visible on the sacred flag. The temple, believed to have been built in the 12th century, attracts thousands of devotees every day and is considered one of the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Jagannath.
Temple servitors and staff responded quickly after noticing the flames and managed to bring the situation under control within a short time. Authorities confirmed that no devotees or temple workers were injured during the incident.
Officials believe the fire may have been triggered by strong winds or possibly a spark from a ritual lamp used during temple ceremonies. However, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Despite the brief panic, temple activities resumed normally soon after the incident, and devotees continued their prayers at the revered shrine.
