Massive Fire Breaks Out at Matarbari Power Plant in Cox’s Bazar

Post by : Meena Ariff

A massive fire erupted late Monday night at the Matarbari Thermal Power Plant in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar, triggering panic among nearby residents after towering flames lit up the night sky.

According to Fire Service and Civil Defence officials, the fire broke out around 9:15 PM in the scrap storage area of the power plant. The exact cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed. Locals living in surrounding areas and commuters on nearby bridges reported seeing huge flames and thick smoke rising from the plant, prompting fears that the fire could spread to critical sections of the facility.

Two units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving the emergency call. Firefighters worked for several hours to contain the blaze and successfully brought it under control before it could reach the main production units, preventing what officials described as a potentially catastrophic situation.

Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Plant operations in the affected area were temporarily halted as a precaution, while safety teams assessed the extent of the damage. Initial reports suggest that the fire was confined to stored scrap materials, significantly reducing the risk to the plant’s core infrastructure.

Officials said a formal investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the fire and assess losses. Security around the power plant has been tightened, and further safety inspections are expected in the coming days.

The Matarbari Thermal Power Plant is a key energy project in the region, and the swift response by emergency services helped avert major disruption to power generation and surrounding communities.
