A powerful tornado, locally known as puting beliung, struck the Karangpandan area in Central Java, Indonesia, on January 21, causing widespread destruction. The tornado tore through a busy local market, overturning stalls, damaging vehicles, and scattering debris across streets. Videos captured by eyewitnesses show intense winds ripping through the area, leaving chaos in its wake and prompting immediate concern for residents’ safety.
Local authorities have dispatched teams to assess the damage and provide emergency assistance to those affected. Many vendors reported significant losses as their market stalls and goods were destroyed or swept away by the strong winds. Vehicles parked near the market were damaged, and roads were littered with debris, making rescue and cleanup operations challenging.
Emergency services, including local disaster management units and volunteers, are working to clear streets, assist displaced residents, and provide temporary shelter to those whose homes were affected. Authorities are also monitoring the area for further risks, as tornadoes in the region can be unpredictable and cause secondary hazards such as fallen power lines or flooding.
Residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid the affected market area until it is deemed safe. Local officials continue to evaluate the full extent of the damage and plan long-term recovery efforts to support the community. The incident underscores the importance of disaster preparedness and rapid response in regions prone to extreme weather events.
