On August 11, 2025, President Donald Trump declared a public safety emergency in Washington, D.C., taking direct federal control of the city’s police department.
The move included the deployment of 800 National Guard troops, even though violent crime in the capital is currently at a 30-year low. Federal agents from DHS, DEA,
and FBI have been stationed across neighborhoods like U Street and Navy Yard.
Since the takeover, more than 100 arrests have been made—mostly for minor offenses. Critics, including Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, have strongly
condemned the action, calling it politically motivated and an overreach of federal authority.
