Early Tuesday morning, a mild earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale jolted several parts of Bageshwar district in Uttarakhand, creating a moment of concern among residents. The tremor struck at precisely 7:25 am, with its epicentre located near Kapkot town, which lies about 30 kilometers away from the district headquarters of Bageshwar.
According to the official report from the District Disaster Management Office, the earthquake was felt widely across the district, prompting many residents to immediately evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure. The tremors, although mild, were strong enough to be noticed clearly by people, especially in the early morning hours when most were indoors.
Despite the initial alarm caused by the earthquake, authorities have confirmed that there have been no reports of injuries, loss of life, or damage to buildings and infrastructure. This reassurance from officials has helped calm the residents and local communities who remain alert but composed.
Shikha Suyal, the District Disaster Management Officer of Bageshwar, shared that the district administration is closely monitoring the situation. She emphasized that all emergency response teams and disaster management personnel have been put on high alert and are ready to act swiftly if the need arises. The proactive preparedness measures and quick communication have been pivotal in minimizing panic among the population.
The region around Bageshwar lies in a seismically active zone, and such low-intensity tremors, while not unusual, serve as important reminders of the area’s vulnerability to earthquakes. Experts say that these smaller quakes are often a natural process of tectonic adjustment but stress the importance of maintaining vigilance and disaster readiness.
Local authorities continue to urge residents to stay calm and follow official instructions. People are encouraged to report any emergencies or unusual activities immediately to the disaster management office or local police. Additionally, citizens are advised to review and practice earthquake safety measures such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” during tremors to protect themselves from potential hazards.
The district administration plans to conduct awareness campaigns in the coming weeks to educate the public about earthquake preparedness and safety protocols, reinforcing the community’s resilience against future seismic events.
As of now, the situation remains stable, and the authorities assure that regular updates will be provided should there be any changes or developments in the aftermath of the earthquake.
