Google Signs 3.6-GW Power Deal With Constellation Energy in US

Google Signs 3.6-GW Power Deal With Constellation Energy in US

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

Google has entered into a major long-term electricity agreement with Constellation Energy as technology companies across the United States race to secure reliable power for rapidly expanding data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Under the arrangement, Google will contract for a total of 3,590 megawatts of electricity from Constellation Energy. Around 890 megawatts of that supply will come through a 20-year power purchase agreement linked to several nuclear power plants that are expected to undergo upgrades to increase their existing generation capacity. The agreement is expected to support more than $4.3 billion in new investment by Constellation Energy and represents another major step in the growing relationship between the technology and nuclear power industries.

Google Targets Reliable Power for Growing Data Center Demand

The agreement comes as Google expands its artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data center operations across the US. Large data centers require enormous quantities of electricity and need a stable supply around the clock. The rapid development of artificial intelligence has increased pressure on technology companies to secure sufficient power for new computing infrastructure. Rather than relying entirely on short-term electricity purchases, major technology companies are increasingly signing long-term agreements with power producers. Google's latest arrangement provides the company with access to additional electricity while also supporting investment in existing power infrastructure.

890 MW Nuclear Power Agreement Runs for 20 Years

A central part of the deal is Google's 20-year agreement for 890 megawatts of electricity from multiple Constellation Energy nuclear facilities. The reactors involved are expected to receive upgrades that will allow them to generate additional electricity from their existing infrastructure. The first upgraded facility is expected to begin delivering electricity to Google in 2028. The arrangement is significant because it combines long-term electricity demand from a major technology company with investment designed to increase the output of existing nuclear facilities.

Additional 2,700 MW Supply Agreement

Beyond the nuclear power purchase agreement, Google has also entered into a long-term supply arrangement covering another 2,700 megawatts of electricity from Constellation in the PJM market. Unlike the 890-megawatt nuclear agreement, this additional power is not linked to a particular generation facility. The companies said the arrangement provides Constellation with greater long-term revenue certainty from its operating power plants while giving Google access to additional electricity as its energy requirements continue to grow. Together, the two agreements bring Google's contracted electricity capacity under the latest arrangement to 3,590 megawatts.

Constellation Plans More Than $4.3 Billion in Investment

The agreement is expected to enable more than $4.3 billion in new investment by Constellation Energy. The investment will support capacity increases at several nuclear reactors located in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The 11 nuclear units involved in the planned upgrades are located across Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. All of them fall within the footprint of PJM Interconnection, the largest electric grid in the United States. The investment could allow existing nuclear facilities to produce more electricity without requiring the construction of entirely new power plants.

Why Nuclear Power Is Becoming Important for Big Tech

The latest Nuclear Energy agreement highlights how electricity has become a critical issue for the technology sector. Artificial intelligence systems require powerful computing infrastructure. Training and operating advanced AI models can involve large clusters of specialised computing equipment, while the data centers hosting these systems must operate continuously. This creates a need for electricity that is not only available in large quantities but also reliable throughout the day. Nuclear power is attracting attention from technology companies because nuclear plants can provide steady electricity while producing very low operational carbon emissions.

Google Is Not Alone in Seeking Nuclear Power

The latest deal reflects a much wider trend in the US energy market. Other major technology companies have also entered agreements with nuclear power operators or explored plans to secure electricity from nuclear facilities. Constellation previously reached an arrangement connected with restarting the Three Mile Island reactor in Pennsylvania to supply Microsoft's data centers. Google has separately pursued an agreement involving the restart of a nuclear power plant operated by NextEra Energy in Iowa. These developments show how the rapid growth of AI and cloud computing is creating new demand for electricity from established power generators.

PJM Faces Growing Pressure From Data Centers

The deal also comes amid increasing concern about electricity demand within the PJM Interconnection region. PJM operates the electricity grid across 13 US states and the District of Columbia. The region has attracted significant data center investment, increasing expectations for electricity demand in the coming years. PJM management has proposed measures under which large data center customers could be required to bring their own electricity supply or potentially face remote reductions in grid power during periods of exceptionally high demand. The proposal has highlighted concerns over how quickly the electricity grid can expand to keep pace with new industrial and data center requirements.

Google Deal Comes Amid 'Bring Your Own Power' Debate

The companies said Google's agreement with Constellation is partly a response to PJM's proposal for large data centers to effectively secure additional power resources. The arrangement could provide a model in which major electricity consumers work directly with power producers to secure long-term supplies. For Google, such agreements can provide greater certainty around future electricity availability. For Constellation, long-term contracts can provide predictable revenue that supports investment in existing generation facilities.

Eleven Nuclear Units Set for Upgrades

The nuclear component of the agreement covers 11 units located in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. These facilities are part of the PJM electricity market and form part of Constellation's wider nuclear generation portfolio. The planned upgrades are intended to increase electricity output from existing reactors. This approach can be significant because expanding existing nuclear plants may allow additional power generation without waiting for entirely new reactors to be developed and constructed.

Constellation Energy's Position in the US Power Market

Constellation Energy is the largest operator of nuclear power plants in the United States and also owns a substantial fleet of natural-gas-fired generation facilities. The company has increasingly positioned its nuclear assets as a source of reliable electricity for large commercial and industrial customers. Long-term agreements with technology companies provide energy producers with predictable demand while helping major electricity consumers plan for future requirements. The Google agreement therefore represents an important commercial relationship between one of the world's biggest technology companies and one of America's largest nuclear power operators.

AI Growth Is Changing America's Energy Landscape

The rapid expansion of AI is beginning to influence decisions far beyond the technology industry. Data center construction requires land, transmission infrastructure, cooling systems and huge quantities of electricity. As AI-related computing capacity expands, technology companies increasingly need to consider where and how their power will be generated. The result is a growing connection between the expansion of artificial intelligence and investments in nuclear, natural gas and renewable electricity. Google's latest agreement demonstrates how large technology companies are becoming major participants in long-term energy planning.

What the Deal Means for Google

For Google, securing 3,590 megawatts of electricity provides greater visibility over future energy availability. The company can use the contracted supply to support its growing data center and computing infrastructure while reducing some of the uncertainty associated with rapidly increasing electricity demand. The long-term structure also gives Google a relationship with a major US electricity producer rather than depending entirely on short-term market conditions. The nuclear portion of the agreement is particularly important because the upgraded facilities are expected to provide additional electricity beginning in 2028.

What the Deal Means for Constellation

For Constellation, Google's agreement creates a major long-term customer and supports investment in existing nuclear infrastructure. The more than $4.3 billion investment expected under the arrangement could increase the output of nuclear facilities while helping maintain their role within the US power system. The additional 2,700-megawatt supply agreement also provides long-term revenue visibility for Constellation's operating plants.

A Major Shift in the Tech-Energy Relationship

Google's 3.6-GW Power Deal with Constellation Energy reflects a broader change in the relationship between technology companies and electricity producers. For years, electricity was largely treated as an infrastructure requirement sitting behind the technology industry. The explosive growth of AI and data centers is changing that equation. Today, securing sufficient electricity is becoming an important part of technology companies' long-term expansion strategies.
