Heart failure is often labeled the silent killer due to its gradual onset and lack of noticeable symptoms. Many individuals feel perfectly fine until they encounter a serious heart issue. This highlights the necessity of daily heart care, irrespective of how healthy you might feel.
Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a prominent heart transplant surgeon, recently shared five habits he diligently avoids to safeguard his heart. In a video posted on November 14, he communicated the essential message that small daily efforts can contribute to long-term heart health.
1. Always monitor your blood pressure
Dr. Yaranov points out that high blood pressure can be perilous as it often presents no early signs. You might feel fine, yet remain at risk. He checks his blood pressure regularly and encourages others to do the same.
2. Don't skip your exercise routine
The heart, just like any other muscle, weakens when not utilized. Dr. Yaranov suggests that even 30 minutes of activity daily can yield significant benefits. Activities like walking, cycling, or even basic home workouts are all beneficial.
3. Steer clear of ultra-processed foods
He cautions that packaged and heavily processed foods can lead to inflammation and increased cholesterol levels, gradually undermining heart health. Instead, he advocates for whole, natural foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and home-cooked meals.
4. Prioritize sleep
Good quality sleep is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart, according to Dr. Yaranov. Insufficient sleep or issues like sleep apnea can elevate blood pressure and heighten heart failure risks. He prioritizes getting adequate rest every night.
5. Adhere to prescribed preventive medications
For those prescribed medications such as statins or blood pressure drugs, Dr. Yaranov asserts their importance in preventing serious heart issues and potentially saving lives.
Dr. Yaranov emphasizes that heart ailments do not develop overnight; they stem from years of unhealthy habits. By incorporating minor daily adjustments—like increased physical activity, improved nutrition, adequate sleep, and timely medication—anyone can enhance their heart’s resilience and health.
