Russia carried out a major overnight missile attack on Ukraine, firing a powerful hypersonic missile at a target located close to the border of NATO member Poland. European allies of Ukraine described the strike as a clear attempt by Moscow to pressure and intimidate countries supporting Kyiv.
The missile used in the attack was identified as the Oreshnik, a hypersonic weapon that can travel at extremely high speeds and is difficult to intercept. This marked only the second known use of the Oreshnik missile by Russia since the beginning of the war, raising fresh concerns across Europe about escalating military tactics.
Alongside the hypersonic strike, Russia launched a wider wave of air attacks across Ukraine during the night. Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least four civilians were killed in Kyiv, while multiple explosions caused serious damage to the city’s power infrastructure. Large parts of the capital were left without electricity, disrupting daily life and emergency services.
The attacks also resulted in damage to the Qatari embassy in Kyiv, highlighting the growing risks faced by diplomatic missions operating in the country. No injuries were reported among embassy staff, but the incident added to international alarm over the safety of foreign representatives.
European leaders strongly condemned the missile launch, stating that targeting areas near NATO borders sends a dangerous message and increases the risk of wider regional conflict. Ukraine’s government accused Russia of deliberately escalating tensions to weaken international military and political support.
Air defence systems intercepted several incoming threats, but officials warned that hypersonic weapons pose a new and serious challenge due to their speed and advanced technology. Ukraine renewed calls for stronger air defence support from its allies, stressing the urgent need to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.
As the conflict continues, the latest strike signals a troubling shift in Russia’s military approach, intensifying fears of further escalation beyond Ukraine’s borders.
