Maintaining gut health is crucial for optimal physical and mental wellness, hinging on our daily decisions. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a renowned gastroenterologist with training from AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, has dedicated 25 years to addressing gastrointestinal issues. On November 15, he outlined eight straightforward habits that everyone can adopt to enhance digestion and overall health.
According to Dr. Sethi, gut health transcends diet; it encompasses morning routines, physical activity, and stress management. He emphasizes that cultivating beneficial habits in 2025 can set the stage for a healthier 2026.
The first recommendation he offers is to steer clear of checking your phone immediately after waking. This prevents an increase in morning cortisol levels that can lead to stress. Instead, he encourages beginning your day with thoughts of gratitude to promote calmness and support healthy digestion. He also advises against using phones in the bathroom, as this can foster unhealthy habits and add unnecessary tension.
His second habit is to bask in sunlight for at least ten minutes each morning. This practice resets the body's internal clock, enhances mood, boosts vitamin D levels, and promotes digestive health.
Another beneficial tip is to take a ten-minute walk post-meals. Dr. Sethi explains that even a brief stroll can aid digestion, reduce gas and bloating, and stabilize blood sugar levels, significantly impacting how one feels after eating.
Incorporating fermented foods into your diet at least three times weekly is also advised. Foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and kanji can enhance gut bacteria naturally, reducing the need for probiotic supplements.
Dr. Sethi underscores that daily repetition of simple habits can lead to significant and lasting health improvements. He advocates for focusing on attainable steps rather than complex diets or strict regimens. A healthy gut can result in increased energy, a more robust immune system, and an overall serene mind.
His clear message: good health begins with the small choices we make every day. By prioritizing mindful mornings, sunlight exposure, movement, and nutritious foods, individuals can cultivate a healthier gut and a happier life.
