Many individuals turn to cotton buds for ear cleaning, yet medical professionals caution against this practice. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford-trained gastroenterologist, has highlighted the potential dangers associated with inserting cotton buds into the ear. His recent disclosure sheds light on the risks involved.
According to Dr. Sethi, our ears essentially clean themselves, eliminating the need for cotton buds or tools to remove wax. Although earwax may appear unsightly, it serves a vital function by shielding the ear canal from dust, debris, and bacteria. Gradually, wax naturally exits the ear. When cotton buds are employed, they merely displace wax deeper, which can lead to blockages, discomfort, or even infections.
Dr. Sethi also pointed out that cotton bud usage can cause physical injury. For instance, the ear canal can become scraped, resulting in pain. In severe cases, damage to the eardrum may occur. If harmed, individuals might experience ringing in the ears, acute pain, or diminished hearing. He stressed that the fleeting sensation of cleanliness doesn't justify these potential long-term risks.
A medical study referenced by the doctor, conducted in 2017, revealed that over 70% of ear injuries treated in emergency rooms resulted from cotton bud usage. This statistic indicates that many mistakenly believe they are safely cleansing their ears, when in fact, they are inflicting harm.
Dr. Sethi recommends eliminating cotton buds from ear-cleaning routines. If excessive wax is a concern, consulting a healthcare professional is the safest course. Properly equipped, a doctor can safely extract the wax. He also noted that packaging on cotton buds warns users, stating, “Do not insert into the ear canal,” yet many continue to overlook this guidance.
It is crucial for everyone to grasp this message: ear maintenance does not necessitate cotton buds or specialized cleaning products. The ear is naturally equipped for self-care. It's wise to rely on the body's intrinsic mechanisms rather than taking unnecessary risks that could lead to injury or lasting hearing impairments.
