Men undergo hormonal transitions known as andropause, commonly referred to as "male menopause." According to Dr. Sanjay Prakash J, a urologist based in Chennai, testosterone levels in men gradually decrease with age, impacting energy, mood, libido, and overall health.
What is Andropause?
Unlike the abrupt hormonal changes women face during menopause, andropause unfolds gradually. Testosterone drops by approximately 0.4% per year beginning in the mid-30s. Factors such as stress, obesity, and diabetes can intensify symptoms.
Common Signs of Male Menopause
Fatigue and Reduced Vitality: Persistent tiredness even after rest.
Mood Variations: Experiences of irritability, anxiety, and mild depression.
Decreased Libido: A decline in sexual interest or performance issues.
Muscle Loss and Increased Belly Fat: Muscle strength diminishes while abdominal fat grows.
Sleep Interruptions: Difficulty sleeping or experiencing hot flashes.
Identifying Andropause
Healthcare providers assess testosterone levels via blood tests and evaluate symptoms thoroughly. They also take into account other medical conditions to differentiate symptoms due to andropause from those caused by stress or illness.
Management Strategies
Lifestyle Adjustments: Incorporating exercise, a balanced diet, reducing alcohol intake, and managing stress levels.
Addressing Other Health Concerns: Managing conditions like diabetes, obesity, and sleep disorders.
Emotional Support: Counseling can aid in addressing mood fluctuations and anxiety.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT): This is considered only if necessary under medical supervision, available in forms such as injections, gels, or implants.
Key Considerations
TRT may not be safe for individuals with prostate or male breast cancer, severe heart failure, a high risk of blood clots, or men who are planning to have children.
Andropause signifies a genuine shift in male hormonal levels. Staying informed, scheduling regular health check-ups, and adopting a healthy lifestyle can help men maintain energy, self-confidence, and sexual well-being. Aging is inevitable, but feeling old doesn’t have to be.
