Apple Sued for Religious Discrimination After Firing Jewish Employee

Apple Sued for Religious Discrimination After Firing Jewish Employee

Post by : Raman

Apple Inc. is facing a federal lawsuit after being accused of religious discrimination and retaliation against a Jewish employee. The lawsuit, filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in Alexandria, Virginia, claims that Tyler Steele, who converted to Judaism in 2023, was fired for refusing to work on the Jewish Sabbath. The case alleges violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects employees from workplace discrimination based on religion, race, sex, or other protected characteristics.

According to the EEOC, Steele began his career at Apple’s Reston, Virginia, store in 2007 as an “Apple Genius,” providing technical support and customer advice. In 2023, after converting to Judaism, Steele requested Fridays and Saturdays off to observe the Sabbath, which begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday. A newly hired manager allegedly denied these requests and also made antisemitic remarks, including comments about Steele’s body odor, while instructing him not to discuss the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel with colleagues.

The EEOC’s lawsuit states that Steele repeatedly raised complaints with Apple about the manager’s conduct, but no action was taken to correct the situation. Ultimately, Steele was terminated in January 2024, just days after refusing to work on a Friday. The EEOC is seeking back pay, punitive damages, and other remedies for Steele due to the alleged “malicious and reckless conduct” by Apple’s management.

This case underscores growing scrutiny of workplace religious discrimination in the United States. Under Acting EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, a conservative Christian appointed by former President Donald Trump, the commission has focused on strengthening protections for employees’ religious rights. In recent statements, Lucas has criticized prior administrations for allowing religious protections to take a “backseat” to other workplace policies.

Apple has not publicly responded to the lawsuit or provided comments regarding the allegations. The company is now under legal pressure to address the claims and demonstrate compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws.

This lawsuit also highlights the broader issue of workplace inclusivity, emphasizing the need for organizations to respect employees’ religious practices and cultural beliefs while maintaining fair employment practices. As the case proceeds in federal court, it could have significant implications for corporate policies on religious accommodations and employee rights across the United States.
