Australia is facing a serious problem with Islamophobia, a government report has revealed. The country’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Aftab Malik, shared the findings of a year-long investigation on Friday in Sydney, warning that anti-Muslim hate has grown stronger and more widespread over recent years.
The report, based on extensive research and community feedback, found that Islamophobia in Australia is “deeply ingrained” and affects people in many ways. Malik described the problem as both interpersonal, meaning direct attacks on people, and structural, meaning systemic discrimination embedded in institutions. He said, “The reality is that Islamophobia in Australia has been persistent, at times ignored and other times denied, but never fully addressed.”
Growing Incidents of Hate
The investigation highlighted that incidents targeting Muslims have increased over the past two decades. These acts include verbal abuse, physical attacks, vandalism of mosques and Muslim properties, and online hate campaigns. Malik shared the story of a Muslim family approached by a stranger on a train who threatened, “I would love to kill them all.” Such experiences show that Muslims often live in fear of being targeted simply because of their faith.
Recommendations to Address Islamophobia
The report contains 54 recommendations aimed at helping the government and parliament combat Islamophobia. These include stronger laws to punish hate speech, more support for victims, and creating programs to educate the public about Muslim communities. It also calls for an independent review of counter-terrorism laws and an inquiry into anti-Palestinian racism.
Malik stressed that addressing Islamophobia is not just about punishing offenders but about changing the broader societal attitudes that allow discrimination to continue. “It is a moment where we decide who we are as a country and whether we are prepared to take the necessary steps to ensure that every person in Australia, regardless of faith, ethnicity or background, is safe, valued and treated with dignity,” he said.
Context of Multicultural Australia
Australia is known internationally for its multiculturalism, but the report shows that this reputation is not fully reflected in the treatment of Muslim communities. Islamophobia, according to Malik, has been persistent, sometimes overlooked, and sometimes denied, which has allowed it to intensify over time.
The report also drew attention to other forms of religious and racial hate. This year, a series of anti-Semitic incidents shocked Australians, including the torching of a Sydney childcare centre, the firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue, and graffiti attacks in Jewish neighborhoods. Additionally, anti-immigration marches, attended by thousands including neo-Nazis, have raised concerns about growing intolerance in society.
Impact on Communities
The consequences of Islamophobia go beyond fear. Muslim Australians report feeling excluded, unsafe, and marginalized in their communities. Many have faced discrimination at work, in schools, and in public spaces. The report emphasizes that these experiences affect mental health, social integration, and trust in public institutions.
Experts believe that ignoring Islamophobia could have long-term consequences for social cohesion in Australia. Strengthening laws, providing support services, and promoting awareness about Muslim communities are necessary steps to prevent further escalation of hate and to protect vulnerable populations.
A Call for Action
The report is a clear call for action. Malik urged the Australian government to implement the recommendations and ensure that laws and policies reflect the country’s commitment to equality and justice. He emphasized that preventing hate crimes and promoting inclusivity is not just the responsibility of government but of all citizens.
Communities and advocacy groups have welcomed the report, saying that it validates the struggles of Muslims living in Australia. They hope that the government’s next steps will lead to meaningful change, stronger protection, and a society where diversity is truly respected.
The growing Islamophobia in Australia is a complex issue with deep roots in society. From direct attacks and threats to systemic discrimination, the Muslim community continues to face challenges that undermine safety and equality. The government’s report, led by Aftab Malik, provides a comprehensive roadmap for addressing these issues. Implementing the recommendations, educating society, and enforcing accountability are critical to ensuring that Australia lives up to its multicultural promise and protects all its citizens from hate.
The situation serves as a reminder that promoting tolerance and understanding is an ongoing responsibility. Australia’s future as an inclusive nation depends on acknowledging these issues and taking real, measurable steps to address them.
