Bengaluru Techie Loses Rs 1.86 Lakh in Online Phone Scam

Bengaluru Techie Loses Rs 1.86 Lakh in Online Phone Scam

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Bengaluru, October 31, 2025: In a shocking online delivery scam, a Bengaluru-based software engineer, Premanand, lost Rs 1.86 lakh after receiving a tile instead of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 smartphone he had ordered online. The incident has raised concerns over growing e-commerce frauds targeting unsuspecting consumers.

Premanand, a resident of Yelachenahalli, placed the order on October 14 and paid the full amount using his HDFC credit card. The package was delivered on October 19 at around 4:16 pm. To his shock, upon unboxing and recording the delivery, he discovered only a square white tile instead of the high-end smartphone.

He immediately lodged a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and approached the Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station. An FIR has been registered under Sections 318(4) and 319 of the Indian Penal Code, covering cheating and cheating by personation, along with Section 66D of the Information Technology Act for online fraud. Authorities have launched an investigation to trace the culprits behind the scam.

This case highlights the growing prevalence of online delivery frauds in India, with similar scams reported in other cities. In Mumbai, a 71-year-old woman lost Rs 18.5 lakh while attempting to order milk online through a fraudulent link. The scammer gained access to her bank accounts by deceiving her during the transaction.

Officials have urged consumers to exercise extreme caution while making online purchases, verify seller credentials, and avoid sharing personal or banking details through unknown links. Cybercrime experts emphasize that vigilance is key to preventing such financial losses in the digital age.

This alarming incident reinforces the need for stricter monitoring of online marketplaces and increased awareness about e-commerce scams among Indian consumers.
