A prominent heart specialist from California is sounding the alarm regarding the unexpected risks associated with long-term melatonin use. Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, who boasts two decades of experience in cardiology, indicated that nightly melatonin consumption for over a year could potentially increase heart failure risk by 90% within a five-year span.
Melatonin, a hormone produced by the brain, regulates the sleep-wake cycle by signaling to the body when to rest. While many individuals resort to melatonin supplements for sleep struggles, Dr. Bhojraj contends that adjustments in sleep habits are often what people truly need.
In an Instagram video released on November 14, Dr. Bhojraj referenced a study by the American Heart Association involving more than 130,000 adults. The findings suggested that individuals using melatonin supplements for over a year faced a significantly heightened risk of developing heart failure.
Though melatonin is naturally occurring, Dr. Bhojraj emphasized that natural does not equate to safe. He compared it to other hormones like cortisol and estrogen, which can be detrimental when imbalanced. He explained that excessive and prolonged melatonin intake might disrupt the body's internal clock.
Furthermore, Dr. Bhojraj pointed out that nightly melatonin consumption can interrupt the circadian rhythm — the system overseeing sleep and various bodily functions. It has the potential to alter hormonal signals and impair the body’s innate melatonin production. He reassured that a melatonin deficiency is rare; rather, many individuals struggle with irregular sleep schedules caused by factors such as late-night screen usage and erratic sleep patterns.
The physician advocates for simpler sleep strategies, such as maintaining a consistent bedtime, dimming lights at night, and steering clear of late-night phone activity. These minor adjustments can enhance sleep quality without the associated heart health risks.
Dr. Bhojraj’s message resonates clearly: while melatonin may appear harmless, its long-term use poses risks to cardiovascular health and disrupts the body’s natural equilibrium.
