Expert Reveals Dietary Choices for Improving Liver Health

Expert Reveals Dietary Choices for Improving Liver Health

Post by : Saif Rahman

Renowned liver expert, Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, affectionately dubbed “The Liver Doc,” has delivered crucial insights on maintaining liver health and minimizing the risk of fatty liver disease. He highlights that making informed dietary choices and steering clear of specific beverages can significantly reduce liver complications that are increasingly prevalent worldwide.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has flagged a rapid increase in liver diseases, predominantly due to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcohol-related liver conditions. Fatty liver has risen to the forefront as a common global health challenge, characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, which can lead to dire health consequences.

Taking to Instagram, Dr. Philips outlined key dietary restrictions, cautioning against four types of foods—sugar-laden beverages, coconut oil, palm oil derivatives, along with butter and ghee. High fat and sugar content in these items can inflict gradual harm on liver function.

Dr. Philips notably stressed the complete avoidance of alcohol, labeling it as a critical perpetrator of liver damage. He asserted that abstaining from alcohol can substantially enhance liver well-being.

In contrast, he advocated for the inclusion of unsweetened black coffee in the diet. The natural compounds in black coffee offer protective benefits for the liver and aid in lower fatty liver risk. However, he cautioned that sugar or cream should not accompany it for optimal effectiveness.

“To protect your liver, limit sugar-sweetened drinks, coconut oil, palm oil-based products, butter, and ghee. Avoid alcohol outright, but include unsweetened black coffee in your diet,” said Dr. Philips.

Health specialists assert that fatty liver disease ensues when fat accumulates in the liver, surpassing 5 percent of its ideal capacity. An ultrasound can easily diagnose this condition. While early fatty liver may present no symptoms, progressive stages can lead to discomfort, pain, or serious liver impairment.

The two primary forms of fatty liver are Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) triggered by excessive alcohol consumption, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) caused by obesity, poor diet, or diabetes, which is now also referred to as Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatosis Liver Disease (MASLD).

Medical professionals note that many remain unaware of their fatty liver condition until it escalates. Some individuals may experience feelings of heaviness or pain in the upper right abdomen post-meals.

In a proactive approach, experts recommend cutting back on fried foods, sugary drinks, and processed snacks while increasing fruit, vegetable, and whole grain intake. Regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and hydration are vital for liver maintenance.

Dr. Philips’ advice highlights that liver integrity relies not only on medications but equally on nutritional choices. Simple lifestyle alterations, including sending alcohol and fried foods packing and opting for plain black coffee, can notably cleanse and bolster liver health.

He concluded with an empowering note on the importance of awareness, urging individuals to comprehend how dietary habits impact their organs and to proactively safeguard their health. By making the right dietary choices, fatty liver disease can be averted before it morphs into a serious health issue.
