Health Risks of Raw Milk: A Doctor's Warning

Health Risks of Raw Milk: A Doctor's Warning

Post by : Saif Rahman

A gastroenterologist from Manipal Hospital has cautioned against the consumption of raw milk, labeling it as potentially hazardous. While many believe that raw milk offers superior health benefits, experts assert otherwise. Unprocessed milk, which hasn't undergone heating to eliminate harmful bacteria, can harbor dangerous microorganisms that lead to severe illness.

Dr. Sambit Bhuyan emphasized that raw milk from cows, goats, and sheep should always be pasteurized before consumption. Pasteurization, involving heating the milk to eradicate harmful germs, is crucial for safety. Skipping this vital process can be detrimental.

Raw milk is known to contain virulent bacteria, including Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and even tuberculosis bacteria. Ingesting these germs can lead to acute food poisoning, characterized by symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and body aches. In extreme cases, infections stemming from raw milk can be life-threatening.

Dr. Bhuyan pointed out that children, pregnant ladies, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems—such as diabetics or cancer patients—are particularly at risk. For these vulnerable groups, the bacteria present in raw milk can trigger serious complications.

Raw milk is additionally perilous for expectant mothers, as it poses risks like miscarriage, premature births, or low birth weight. This stems from the potential presence of Listeria, which is harmful during pregnancy.

Despite common beliefs that raw milk contains more nutrients, Dr. Bhuyan argues that the associated health dangers far outweigh any perceived advantages. Milk is safe only if it is pasteurized appropriately.

The central message from the doctor is clear: the dangers of raw milk are not worth the potential benefits. Opting for pasteurized milk remains the safest choice to enjoy its nutritional advantages without compromising health.
