Conference EPR2025 Kicks Off in Riyadh to Address Nuclear Emergency Preparedness

Conference EPR2025 Kicks Off in Riyadh to Address Nuclear Emergency Preparedness

Post by : Maya Rahman

The International Conference on Preparedness and Response to Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies (EPR2025) commenced in Riyadh yesterday. This significant gathering is organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC). Spanning four days, the conference is themed “Building the Future in an Evolving World.” It attracts professionals and specialists from over 100 nations.

As one of the largest global forums for nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness, EPR2025 showcases more than 120 scientific papers, 100 posters, and numerous panel discussions. With over 700 experts participating, along with representatives from major international organizations, the event focuses on sharing insights, reviewing challenges, and exploring innovative approaches to effectively manage nuclear incidents.

Key discussions at the conference will focus on establishing best practices that enable countries to respond swiftly and effectively during nuclear or radiological crises. A dedicated exhibition accompanies the event, showcasing both national and international experiences in emergency planning, early warning systems, and response protocols. Cutting-edge technologies designed to enhance detection, communication, and coordination during nuclear emergencies will also be presented by global firms.

During the opening session, the NRRC highlighted that emergency preparedness concepts must evolve. Countries, as they progress, should adapt their systems to confront emerging risks by adopting contemporary tools and ensuring strong inter-agency cooperation. The NRRC emphasized that emergency readiness is a collective effort requiring the collaboration of governments, experts, and communities to build a proactive, coordinated response.

The IAEA reiterated the need for countries to bolster their long-term emergency response capabilities while fostering strong ties with the international community. Information sharing, learning from past experiences, and technical cooperation are vital; these will aid in mitigating the effects of nuclear and radiological emergencies, thus enhancing global security.

The importance of international frameworks and agreements, overseen by the IAEA, was also underscored. Saudi Arabia actively participates in numerous such initiatives, and the agency pointed out the global networks that facilitate inter-country communication during emergencies.

Notably, EPR2025 holds particular significance as it marks the first instance of this conference being hosted outside the IAEA headquarters, highlighting Saudi Arabia's commitment to enhancing global preparedness and response to nuclear crises.

This platform enables experts to share insights, investigate new challenges, and discuss innovative strategies that integrate national and international preparedness efforts. Hosting EPR2025 acknowledges Saudi Arabia’s advancing capabilities in nuclear safety and regulatory measures, reinforcing its role in global collaboration.

By spearheading EPR2025, Saudi Arabia demonstrates its dedication to elevating emergency response standards globally and enriching international preparedness initiatives. Attendees can anticipate shared knowledge, advancements in technology, and enhanced collaborations that will positively impact nations worldwide.
