Air quality issues in Delhi-NCR have escalated into a pressing daily concern. Residents are often resorting to masks, air purifiers, and indoor plants for protection. However, dietitian Sonal Sureka emphasizes that internal nutrition is equally critical for fortifying the body against external pollutants.
According to her, a well-chosen diet serves as a hidden defense mechanism. During periods of poor air quality, the body requires enhanced support to combat harmful airborne particles. Incorporating antioxidants and anti-inflammatory rich foods can significantly improve resilience. These nutritional choices not only protect cellular health but also bolster lung function.
She recommends that colorful meals should be the norm during times of pollution. This involves increasing the intake of various fruits and vegetables, each of which contributes distinct vitamins and minerals. Whole foods, such as seasonal vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, are optimal for nourishment and surpass the quality of processed options.
Moreover, she stresses the importance of protein. Lean protein sources, including dal, paneer, eggs, fish, and chicken, are vital for maintaining muscle strength, especially those needed for effective respiration. Staying hydrated is also crucial, as it aids in clearing mucus and keeping the throat and airways moist.
Sonal Sureka also proposes simple herbal concoctions to soothe respiratory passages. She advises simmering water with tulsi leaves, black pepper, and a pinch of turmeric, which can be consumed warm twice daily. This remedy may assist in alleviating nasal discomfort and irritation linked to smog.
In summary, while pollution impacts the air quality we inhale, proper nutrition can empower the body from within. While masks and purifiers provide external defense, a healthy diet is key to coping with the drawbacks of polluted air. Making minor yet consistent dietary choices can fortify the body and mitigate adverse effects over time.
