On 26 August 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Suzuki plant in Gujarat to mark an important step in India’s journey toward clean and sustainable transport. During the event, he officially launched two major efforts that reflect the country’s determination to reduce pollution and move toward a greener future.
This occasion was not just about a car launch. It was about India’s wider vision—building cleaner vehicles, using new technology, and preparing to become a global leader in green mobility.
Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Together
The prime minister spoke about hybrid vehicles, which use both a fuel engine and a battery motor. He explained that these vehicles are a practical and immediate way to lower pollution while giving older vehicles a second life. His message was clear: India should not see electric cars and hybrid cars as separate paths but as two strong tools working together for clean mobility.
Hybrids, according to him, can act as a bridge while the country moves toward full electric adoption. They are easier for people to use, can run longer without charging, and can help reduce fuel consumption.
India’s e-Vitara Steps into the World
One of the highlights of the event was the unveiling of Maruti Suzuki’s new electric SUV, the e-Vitara. Built entirely in India, this vehicle is the company’s first major entry into the world of electric cars.
The e-Vitara is not only for Indian roads. It has been designed for global markets and will be exported to more than 100 countries. This step marks a historic moment for the Indian automobile industry, as cars carrying the tag “Made in India” will now be driven around the world.
This launch strengthens the belief that India can compete with global giants in clean vehicle production.
Building Batteries, Building the Future
At the same event, Prime Minister Modi also launched local production of hybrid battery components. Specifically, India will now produce battery electrodes at the Toshiba-Denso-Suzuki (TDSG) plant in Gujarat.
This is important because earlier most of these parts had to be imported. Now, about 80 percent of battery components will be made within India itself. Local manufacturing means lower costs, more jobs, and reduced dependence on foreign suppliers.
The move also shows India’s seriousness in building a complete ecosystem for clean transport—from vehicles to batteries.
Local Effort, Global Reach
By making both the e-Vitara and key battery parts in India, the country is moving closer to its dream of becoming a clean-mobility hub for the world. This is not just about one car model; it is about building a strong foundation for an entire industry.
The focus on local production also means that Indian workers, engineers, and factories will gain valuable experience. This knowledge will help India design and produce more advanced vehicles in the future.
Old Vehicles, New Life
The prime minister also reminded everyone of India’s innovative approach to sustainability. He recalled a bold idea—to give old vehicles a new life by converting them into hybrid versions.
For example, Maruti Suzuki recently built a working prototype of a hybrid ambulance within just six months. This effort was made possible under the PM E-Drive scheme, which has a budget of ₹10,900 crore. The scheme supports a variety of green vehicles, including hybrid ambulances, electric buses, trucks, and more.
This shows that India is not only thinking about new cars but also finding ways to improve and reuse existing vehicles.
Why This Matters
This moment is much more than a product launch. It reflects:
A serious move toward cleaner energy and reduced pollution.
A big boost to local manufacturing and innovation.
India’s entry as a global exporter of clean vehicles.
Smart use of resources by converting old vehicles into hybrid ones.
A step toward self-reliance—making both vehicles and batteries in India.
For ordinary people, this means more choices in the market, better technology, and cleaner air in the long run.
Wider Vision and Future Steps
Prime Minister Modi also spoke about India’s strengths—its democracy, young population, and talented workforce. He said these qualities make the country one of the most attractive places for investors and innovators.
He explained that this launch is only one part of a bigger journey. India is also preparing for futuristic industries like semiconductors. Plans for six new semiconductor plants are already in motion. Just like cars and batteries, chips will soon be made in India as well.
The message was clear: India wants to be a leader not just in transportation but in all areas of technology and clean energy.
The launch of the e-Vitara and hybrid battery production is a major milestone, but it is only the beginning. India’s path to clean mobility will involve more research, better infrastructure, and greater cooperation between government and private companies.
Charging stations will need to expand quickly. Public awareness will need to grow so that more people feel comfortable switching to hybrid or electric cars. And most importantly, India must continue to invest in new technology and skill development.
