Experiencing leg swelling is common, particularly after extended periods of standing or sitting. Typically, this swelling subsides on its own and poses no threat. However, in some instances, it can indicate a significant underlying health issue. Heart surgeon Dr. Jeremy London, who boasts 25 years of expertise, elaborates on how to discern when swelling warrants attention.
Dr. London defines leg, ankle, or foot swelling as edema, which occurs when excess fluid escapes from blood vessels and accumulates in tissues. This leads to noticeably puffier legs, a heavy sensation, and, in some cases, walking difficulties. While some sources of swelling are benign, others may require medical intervention.
He further elucidated that inadequate functioning of the veins can cause blood to pool in the lower legs instead of returning to the heart, a condition known as chronic venous insufficiency that can result in persistent swelling and discomfort.
Serious swelling might arise when the heart, kidneys, or liver are compromised. Poor organ function can impede fluid management, causing it to collect in lower body areas. This type of swelling should be taken seriously.
Certain medications, especially those prescribed for blood pressure, pain relief, or hormonal issues, can also lead to swelling. Dr. London emphasized the importance of informing your healthcare provider if any new medicine triggers swelling.
Another potential cause is lymphatic system dysfunction, which, if blocked, leads to swelling known as lymphedema, often necessitating long-term care.
To alleviate swelling, Dr. London advises regular movement. Walking helps the muscles push blood back to the heart, while elevating the legs can minimize swelling. Compression stockings may also be beneficial as they assist in expelling excess fluid from tissues.
However, he cautioned that sudden swelling, unilateral swelling, or swelling associated with pain, chest pressure, or breathing difficulties could suggest a blood clot needing urgent medical evaluation. He urges individuals to act quickly if they notice these warning signs.
While most swelling is non-threatening, Dr. London stresses the importance of being aware of your body. Proactive measures can avert significant issues. Engaging in activities like walking, elevating legs, and monitoring for unusual occurrences can help maintain health and safety.
This guidance aims to empower individuals in recognizing their symptoms, but it should not replace professional medical advice. For any concerns, individuals are advised to consult a doctor.
