NEW YORK — Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, officially announced his bid for the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, aiming to fill a key New York seat being vacated by longtime Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler.
“This district should have a representative who can harness the creativity, energy and drive of this district and translate that into political power in Washington,” Schlossberg said in a campaign video shared on social media.
The 12th Congressional District, which includes Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Upper East Side, and midtown, has been a Democratic stronghold, and Nadler has served as its representative for 17 terms. He announced in September that he would not seek reelection, suggesting that a younger Democratic candidate could better serve the district’s evolving needs.
Schlossberg, a Democrat, will officially launch his campaign on Wednesday. He has cultivated a significant following on social media, often weighing in on national issues and occasionally critiquing relatives, including his cousin, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Last month, Schlossberg shared a Halloween-themed post mocking Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” message.
The 36-year-old Schlossberg aims to leverage his Kennedy legacy while emphasizing fresh energy and new perspectives for his constituents. His entry adds excitement to the race, which is expected to attract multiple Democratic contenders due to the district’s prominence and history.
Political analysts note that Schlossberg’s famous surname provides both recognition and scrutiny, with voters likely weighing his family legacy alongside his policy positions and vision for the district.
If elected, Schlossberg would join a growing number of younger lawmakers in Congress while continuing the Kennedy family’s long-standing engagement in American politics.
