Record-Breaking £87.3 Million Raised at the 2025 London Marathon

Post by : Maya Rahman

The 2025 London Marathon has achieved a remarkable feat in charitable fundraising. Organisers reported that this year's event raised a staggering £87.3 million, exceeding the former record of £73.5 million set in 2024. This marks an extraordinary increase of £13.8 million, which is nearly a 19% rise compared to the previous year. The London Marathon is renowned for its philanthropic spirit, and this recent triumph reinforces its status as one of the premier fundraising events globally.

Since its inception in 1981, the London Marathon has epitomized community spirit and generosity. With the record total achieved this year, the cumulative amount raised has now reached a phenomenal £1.4 billion. Thousands of runners, advocating for a multitude of causes, have contributed to this legacy over the decades. From medical research to environmental initiatives, the funds enliven lives across the UK and other regions.

This year's marathon not only set fundraising benchmarks but also established itself as the world's largest marathon event. A remarkable 56,640 runners completed the race, setting a new global record for finishers in a single marathon. The event also showcased incredible performances, particularly that of Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, who set a new women's-only world record with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 50 seconds, marking another historic moment in the race's narrative.

Interest in the London Marathon continues to escalate annually. Organisers revealed that a record-breaking 1,133,813 individuals entered the public ballot for the 2026 event, signaling its unmatched appeal both as a sporting challenge and a catalyst for positive change. The 2026 marathon is set for Sunday, 26 April, with high expectations for another inspiring chapter.

The official fundraising partner, Enthuse, also celebrated a record year, reporting that participants raised over £35.8 million via its online platform. The average donation was £46.75, and the typical fundraising page gathered £2,809, reflecting the generosity of donors and the commitment of runners to their chosen causes.

Chester Mojay-Sinclare, CEO and founder of Enthuse, described the event as an “incredible force for good.” He noted that each year, more charities benefit from the growing fundraising opportunities presented by the marathon, allowing them to sustain their essential work.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, commended all participants and supporters for their contributions. “Countless charities benefit from the funds raised by the incredible efforts of those who completed 26.2 miles on Sunday 27 April,” he stated. “This phenomenal amount will support these organisations in making a meaningful difference throughout the year.”

He further emphasized that the marathon is a celebration of community, resilience, and kindness, with each runner's story enriching the event's legacy of inspiring acts of generosity.

The official charity partner for the 2025 London Marathon, Pancreatic Cancer UK, raised a significant £2.8 million through its runners. CEO Diana Jupp expressed pride in every participant who took part. “We are incredibly proud of our runners who faced this ultimate challenge and collectively raised an extraordinary £2.8 million,” she remarked.

She highlighted that the funds are already being directed towards critical research aimed at enhancing early detection and treatment strategies for pancreatic cancer. This achievement underscores the marathon’s ongoing role in directly fostering life-saving initiatives across various sectors.

The London Marathon transcends being a mere sporting event; it unites individuals from all backgrounds—ranging from seasoned athletes to novices—united by a singular purpose: to make a positive impact. The 2025 event exemplified the strength of community, generosity, and human perseverance.

As the marathon's influence continues to expand annually, it sets new benchmarks in participation and fundraising. With over a million applicants competing for a place in next year’s race, the future of this emblematic event appears brighter than ever.
