Maryland Physician Cautions Against Long-Term High Heel Use

Maryland Physician Cautions Against Long-Term High Heel Use

Post by : Saif Rahman

High heels, often a go-to for events and workplaces, may pose hidden risks to our bodies, according to a Maryland physician. Dr. Kunal Sood, an expert in anaesthesiology and interventional pain medicine, recently highlighted how long-term high heel wear can impact tendons, joints, and elevate the chances of knee arthritis.

Dr. Sood elaborates that these stylish shoes disrupt the body's natural alignment. Prolonged wear keeps the foot in a pointed position, leading to the shortening of the Achilles tendon and calf muscles, which can become tight and less flexible over time. Consequently, ankle mobility diminishes, making flat shoes increasingly uncomfortable. These physiological shifts raise the potential for tendon strain or injury.

A major concern he raises is the effect on knee joints. He explains that high heels shift the body’s weight forward, putting undue stress on the inner knee, which can accelerate cartilage wear over time. This uneven load raises the likelihood of knee osteoarthritis, a condition marked by pain, stiffness, and mobility issues.

Additionally, high heels alter a person’s gait, usually resulting in shorter strides and limited ankle flexibility. Dr. Sood points out that these modified movement patterns can linger even after one stops wearing heels, showcasing how such adjustments can have lasting impacts.

In summary, Dr. Sood warns that consistently wearing restrictive high heels extends beyond merely affecting feet; it can lead to changes in tendons, joints, and walking behaviors that persist long term. While high heels may enhance appearance, regular use can impose significant physical strain.

Experts suggest opting for comfortable, supportive shoes for everyday wear and limiting high heel usage. Regular stretching of calf muscles and allowing feet to rest can mitigate the risks associated with prolonged wear.
