Manitoba Hydro aims to enhance its electricity output by 1,760 megawatts over the next ten years—this represents over a quarter of the present capacity—by integrating new developments and energy conservation strategies.
On Thursday, the Crown corporation disclosed aspects of its integrated resource strategy, focusing on measures to avert a potential energy crisis in winter as soon as 2029.
The initiative plans to introduce 900 megawatts of new production capacity by 2035. Major projects include the construction of three natural gas turbines in Brandon, wind farms spearheaded by Indigenous-owned companies, enhancements to current hydroelectric facilities, and a pilot project featuring five megawatts of battery storage.
In parallel with boosting power generation, Manitoba Hydro intends to execute 860 megawatts worth of energy-saving initiatives aimed at lowering peak demand during extreme weather conditions. Customers may receive incentives for reducing their electricity consumption voluntarily during high-demand periods.
Scott Powell, Hydro’s communications director, stated, “Reducing the peak load enables us to accommodate more customers without the need for significant new capacity.”
NDP cabinet minister Adrien Sala noted that any variable-rate plans would be optional, aimed at reducing energy expenses for consumers. Approval from the Public Utilities Board would be necessary for implementation.
Nonetheless, environmental advocates have voiced apprehensions. Laura Cameron from the Manitoba Climate Action Team criticized the dependence on natural gas turbines, urging Hydro to adopt more aggressive energy efficiency goals and invest in larger battery storage systems to support wind energy.
Sala countered by saying that battery technology is still in the nascent stages and too expensive for quick scaling; however, Manitoba Hydro intends to proceed cautiously with its use to enhance grid reliability while maintaining affordable energy rates.
