Dr Amir Khan, an NHS physician in the UK, has shared significant insights on maintaining vaginal health. He emphasizes that many misconceptions about vaginal cleaning practices are misguided. His key point: the vagina is inherently self-cleaning and does not require strong or scented cleansers.
Dr Khan indicated that using scented soaps, wipes, sprays, or specialty washes can disrupt the natural bacterial equilibrium of the vagina, which is crucial for infection prevention. The use of such products may eliminate beneficial bacteria, leading to issues like itching, irritation, and infections. He recommends that a simple rinse with warm water is sufficient for external cleaning.
Additionally, he reassured that vaginal discharge is a normal phenomenon. Most women experience some form of discharge daily, acting as the body’s built-in mechanism for maintaining vaginal cleanliness and health. Attention should only be given if there is a notable change in color, smell, or texture.
Dr Khan also addressed common worries regarding vaginal odor. He noted that every vagina has its unique scent, which is not indicative of poor hygiene. A healthy vagina doesn’t have to smell like floral fragrances. However, if there’s a sudden, strong, or foul odor, it could signal an infection, warranting consultation with a healthcare professional.
He tackled the prevalent myth surrounding tampons getting lost within the body, explaining that the cervix serves as a barrier, preventing a tampon from entering other parts of the anatomy. Although a tampon may shift slightly, a doctor can effortlessly retrieve it if necessary.
Dr Khan concluded by encouraging women to trust their bodies. For millions of years, the vagina has effectively managed its own care. Basic cleaning, attention to changes, and warm water are all that is required—no extravagant products or harsh chemicals are necessary.
This advice is crucial, particularly as many women are influenced by marketing and social media to use multiple products to achieve a feeling of “cleanliness.” Dr Khan’s guidance reminds us that simpler, more natural methods are often the healthiest options.
