As the Midwest begins to recover from intense snowfall and ice disrupting Thanksgiving travel, the Northeast is gearing up for its first major snowstorm of the winter season.
Northern New England is bracing for up to 10 inches (25 cm) of snow, amid predictions of strong winds and icy conditions. States in the storm's path include New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine.
Winter storm warnings and advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service throughout the area, with expectations that some regions could receive as much as a foot (30 cm) of snow by Tuesday, signifying a notable first snowfall for various communities.
This winter weather event follows Chicago's record-setting snowfall of over 8 inches (20 cm) over the weekend, which marked the highest single-day November snowfall for the city. Although snowfall around the Great Lakes is diminishing, the new storm is expected to travel toward the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.
Residents in Maine have been urged to postpone travel as coastal regions may experience significant snowfall from Tuesday morning through Wednesday. New Hampshire’s Department of Transportation has also invited the public to submit names for its snowplow fleet, following last year’s winning title of “Ctrl-Salt-Delete.”
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania is preparing for measurable snow along its extensive 565-mile (909 km) Turnpike system, with crews already treating lanes in anticipation of the storm’s arrival. Vehicle restrictions on several interstate routes will begin Tuesday morning, and over 600 operators alongside safety personnel stand ready to maintain clear roadways, with support from 23 maintenance sheds operating around the clock.
Travelers in the Midwest continue to face fallout from the Thanksgiving rush, as Chicago reported numerous flight cancellations and delays due to the weekend snow. Many travelers encountered extended waits as connecting flights faced hours-long delays.
Nationwide, airports have been actively working to clear ice from planes, but congested roads persist despite snow removal efforts. Officials are advising travelers to proceed with caution and plan for extra time due to winter driving conditions.
