On December 19, the Omani Center for Organ Transplant, under the Ministry of Health, celebrated Oman Organ Donation Day. This annual event focuses on the values of organ donation and solidarity within Omani society. The initiative aims to enhance organ donation services and promote the importance of donating organs while living or registering through the Shifa app to donate after death, thereby aiding patients in critical need.
Dr. Qasim bin Mohammed Al Jahdhami, Head of the Organ Donation Department at the National Organ Transplant Programme, highlighted the programme's significant achievements. Over 153 reports of potential brain-dead cases were received from various governorates in Oman. With family consents, the programme successfully facilitated eight organ transplants, including kidneys and livers, for patients lacking living donors. Notably, this success included the first heart transplant recorded in Oman’s history.
He mentioned that this year saw 15 liver transplants, comprising 14 from living donors and one from a deceased donor. Moreover, 35 kidney transplants took place, sourced from both living and deceased donors, showcasing the advancing capabilities of the national organ transplant initiative.
Additionally, 107 corneal transplants were conducted in 2025 as part of the national programme, expanding the availability of vision-restoring treatments across numerous hospitals in Oman.
The Oman Organ Donation Day featured a talk by the medical director of Spain's National Transplant Organization, who shared insights into successful international transplantation practices and the associated medical and economic advantages. Another lecture by Dr. Ali Al Jahdhami emphasized the virtues of organ donation in Islam, addressing its ethical, legal, and humanitarian significance.
Attendees listened to touching stories from organ transplant recipients, sharing their journeys through illness and the transformative power of organ donation. The event took place under the patronage of Dr. Said bin Harib Al Lamki, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Health Affairs, with attendance from senior officials and healthcare representatives across Oman.
