As air quality in Delhi-NCR remains severely compromised, with the air quality index far exceeding safe levels, residents face increasing respiratory issues such as cough, eye irritations, and fatigue. This alarming spike in pollution affects everyone, from seniors to children. While air purifiers and face masks are common protective tools, experts emphasize that these measures alone are insufficient. Implementing additional healthy habits is crucial for minimizing the adverse effects of polluted air.
During a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Leelamohan PVR, a consultant physician at Padithem Health Care and Practo in Bengaluru, shared three straightforward health strategies individuals can adopt at home. He noted the rising prevalence of respiratory conditions linked to air pollution, urging people to practice greater caution in their daily routines, particularly when pollution levels surge.
The first recommendation is to limit time spent outdoors. Pollution peaks in the early morning and late evening due to cooler temperatures, causing smog to settle near the ground and creating hazardous breathing conditions. Dr. Leelamohan advised against outdoor activities during these high-risk periods. He suggested keeping windows shut and checking real-time AQI data before going outside. Those who prefer outdoor exercises should consider moving their routines indoors or scheduling them for mid-day when pollution levels are lower.
The second piece of advice focuses on nurturing lung health through natural methods. Staying adequately hydrated is one of the most effective practices, as water aids the body in flushing out toxins. Dr. Leelamohan also advocated for the incorporation of deep-breathing practices like pranayama or diaphragmatic breathing to enhance lung function and clear the airways. Utilizing a saline nasal rinse can alleviate discomfort caused by dust and pollutants, improving breathing ease.
For his final recommendation, Dr. Leelamohan emphasized the importance of nutrition in bolstering the body’s defenses. He warned that increased pollution heightens oxidative stress, resulting in cell damage from harmful free radicals. Foods high in antioxidants, such as citrus fruits, amla, turmeric, leafy greens, walnuts, and omega-3-rich foods, are key to protecting lung health. Incorporating these foods into daily meals helps combat inflammation, boost immunity, and maintain lung health during polluted periods.
Dr. Leelamohan concluded that small, consistent actions—like staying hydrated, ensuring clean indoor air, consuming antioxidant-rich foods, and practicing mindful breathing—can yield significant results. Although these habits do not eliminate pollution, they help the body remain resilient in the face of it.
He also cautioned that these tips are meant for general knowledge and are not substitutes for professional medical advice. Individuals experiencing chronic breathing difficulties or persistent symptoms should seek guidance from a healthcare provider.
