Professionals Caution Against Classifying Aging as a Disease

Professionals Caution Against Classifying Aging as a Disease

Post by : Saif Rahman

Aging is an inevitable aspect of life that impacts everyone. Recently, there’s been a push from some scientists to categorize aging as a disease officially. They argue that this would lead to increased research, funding, and better healthcare. However, a significant number of experts counter this view, asserting that labeling aging as a disease could inflict more harm socially.

The global discussion escalated in 2018 when the World Health Organization introduced a category titled “old age” in its International Classification of Diseases. This sparked outrage among many who stress that aging doesn’t mean being unwell. Following considerable backlash, the WHO rescinded this terminology in 2021, replacing it with the more respectful “ageing-associated declines in intrinsic capacities.”

Some researchers maintain that treating aging as a disease is justified, citing how aging can lead to increased susceptibility to conditions like cancer, heart disease, and hypertension. They suggest that focusing on aging as a disease could pave the way for innovative therapies and mitigate age-related health issues.

Yet, critics argue that this viewpoint is overly narrow. They contend that branding aging as a disease conveys a misleading narrative, implying that older individuals are flawed or require “fixing.” This rhetoric can amplify stigma and lead older adults to feel undervalued or unhealthy despite leading fulfilling, active lives.

Moreover, specialists point out that aging encompasses more than mere physical decline. It also represents an era of emotional development, wisdom, and stability. Many seniors report heightened happiness, confidence, and improved life management skills. Focusing solely on disease detracts from these valuable aspects of aging.

Experts caution that designating aging as a disease could reinforce ageist sentiments. It may also instill a fear of aging or promote unrealistic standards regarding eternal youth. Instead, professionals advocate for recognizing aging as a normal life event. Health systems should assist older adults without framing natural aging as a medical condition.
